Now that I have some experience using a home generator, I will step up to at least 8000 watts continuous, most likely going with the Briggs and Stratton Elite 10000 watt continuous generator. The purpose of additional wattage is to stabilize the output of the generator to avoid power surges that could damage electronic equipment.Noise is tolerable. Hope we never need it again. We started running within 15 of losing electric, hooked up only to our sump pump. In the morning, we moved it up on blocks, under a tarp, farther away from the house, where we had set up. We ran this genny on for 2- 3 hours, off for 1 hour for the next two days, and it used about 9 gallons of gas. We powered our sump pump, refridgerator, tv, a light, and rotated two space heaters. And rotated a spare outdoor pump. We used the microwave and the coffee pot.It wasn't full on electric for the house, but it was enough to make the unbearable much, much better. Just not losing everything in the fridge and keeping water out of the basement - priceless. If you are reading this, you must want or need a generator.
