HARMONIST “Harmonist” is an effect which the amount of shifting is adjusted according to an analysis of the guitar input, allowing you to create harmonics based on diatonic scales. Adding an Effect Synchronized to the Performance Tempo When any effect other than HARMONIST is selected, you can set the tempo so you get an effect that is synchronized to. You can also layer this as you perform something else, then record these together (overdub). You can keep the recorded content playing continuously as backing and produce other special effects. Since it suppresses the noise in synchronization with the envelope of the guitar sound (the way in which the guitar sound decays over time), it has very little effect on the guitar sound, and does not harm the natural character of the sound. RING MOD This is an effect that crosses the ME-50’s internal oscillator with the guitar source sound to change the sound to a metallic sound devoid of any feeling of pitch. Switching Tone Modify On and Off with the Foot Switch This changes the characteristics of the connected guitar. This is an effect that produces a long sustain by evening out the volume level of the input signal. DRIVE knob Adjusts the amount of distortion. Turning the knob to the right (clockwise) creates a stronger distortion and increases the volume. Turning this all the way to the TURBO range increases the effect even more. Having an assignable expression pedal is great, but not if you have to dig through menus just to select the effect you want to control. I spilled coffee on mine. It got in the electronics and the unit went bananas. I unplugged it, took it apart (now I don't recommend you do this) removed the circuit board, washed it and the inside of the unit with clean water, dried everything with a hairdrier and reassembled the lot. It then worked perfectly and still does a year or more later.I thought of upgrading, but what the ME-70 abandoned didn't make up for the new features for me as all I want this for is a multi FX feed into my amp. Bring this back Boss.The only downside to it is that it doesn't come with a DC In adaptor, but you can pick those up pretty cheap. I keep the Boss and the Wah in a Boss effects case and both fit nicely. I use the Boss when I want some nice chorus and delays when recording - very clean sounding. No, it's not perfect, but for the money and for what it can do.it's the bomb! I've been playing guitar everyday for 40 years. I'm in a working top 40 classic rock and country band. On stage I use a 2001 Strat, Fender Blues Deluxe Reissue and my ME-50. That's it. I never use the preset side of the board. I don't write patches. I used to, and I used to try to make patches for different songs and go to those patches, but a patch that sounds great one night will almost always sound like trash the next night. It's not the ME's fault. Weather, amp placement, amp settings, quantity of people in the room, how much my ears are ringing, etc.So I just use it manually. What I love is the portability, reliability, ease of use, consistency, small size, simplicity, versatility, and of course, the sounds it helps me make. I am a tone hound. I have a bedroom full of vintage guitars, amps and effects units, but I would be insane to lug any of that around to clubs and bars. I use cheap, reliable and rugged gear. Tone? All the tone I want. I run the amp at clean and at low volume, and push the amp with the output signal of the ME. This means the amp is quiet when I'm quiet, and it also does something magical to the Blues Deluxe. I always run the compressor and noise gate, and I usually just use the Tube Screamer distortion setting. I use just a touch of spring reverb instead of the amp's. I use the wah and have a real love for the vibrato pedal. For Mississippi Queen I use the Fuzzface. In the end, we are talking about a super easy, reliable, versatile, small, simple, easy to use, inexpensive and all in one effects unit that mimics a multitude of vintage gear very well (more often better). Why would I want to drag around an unreliable, gigantic and expensive pedal board around. The tone of the ME-50 can be magical once you spend enough time with it. There were times I hated this thing, but it was only because I was still unfamiliar with it. If you have the distortion past 12 o'clock, even on the Tube Screamer, you aren't using it right. Instead of going past 12 o'clock, crank up the compressor. The noise gate doesn't need to go beyond 10 o'clock ever. Mine sits at 9 o'clock. Do you know what it would cost to buy each effect separately. And then fit them all onto a pedal board. Yes, the Boss ME-50 is very awesome. People laugh at my stuff until they hear it. Even the tubes are 5 years old and original. Run your amp clean and low, then push it using the ME-50's volume knobs. It has three! The master's, distortion's and the compressor's! That's where the magic is. It's like using a powerful clean booster. The amp will sing. UPDATE on 10-28-2015; Well, things have changed a lot in the last 3 years. I'm still using the ME-50 exclusively for playing in our classic rock band. But I'm using it differently these days and of course I think it sounds better than ever now. I sometimes use a 1970 Bassman, with a matching 2x12 cabinet, instead of the Fender Blues Deluxe Reissue as well. We play music from Wicked Game from Chris Isaak all the way to Man In A Box by Alice In Chains. We also play a lot of Zeppelin and CCR. So I still need a rig that is pretty darn versatile. So lately the way I've been setting up with the band is very simple. Guitar - ME-50 - Amp. Nothing else. And the ME-50 is simple too. I still don't use the tone modifier. I don't use the compressor anymore. And I barely ever touch the ME-50 anymore once I'm plugged in. The noise gate sits at 9 or 10 o'clock. The reverb sits somewhere on Hall. For distortion I just leave in on Tube Screamer all night. Gain at 3 o'clock. Bottom at 3 o'clock also. Tone at 1 or 2 o'clock and Level at 12 oclock. I am totally blown away with this set up. I'm playing with the knobs on my guitar a lot more, but every sound I'm looking for can be found there now. For clean I simply roll the volume on my guitar down. Even with the Tube Screamer on, I get a great classic clean tone this way. And as I turn up the volume the tone gets dirty really fast. On max volume my guitar is wailing like Carlos Santana. Plus the guitar is super dynamic. I can go from clean to dirty simply by playing lighter and heavier. And the tone is amazing. In your face and with no mud at all. So there you have it. That's the way to get awesome classic rock tones from this unit. However.I am using a guitar with hotter pickups these days. My Strat with the low output HS-3s did not like this set up. My guitar today has Seymour Duncan designed JB and 59er pickups in it. I'm also playing my amp pretty loud. So when I push things the amp is adding some dirt of it's own. And the tone is just classic. That's the point. So, a trick I want to share is that the ME-50 has a most amazing chorus, but it's not the chorus. It's the harmonizer. Just set all the knobs at 12 o'clock on that harmonizer and be prepared to hear the most awesome chorus sound. It's great for anything, and that includes metal. Koehler 4.0 out of 5 stars I was woried that the Amp Modeling function would not be very good, but I was pleasantly wrong. The line-out function into the house PA provides excellent sound. The amp-modeling is transparent to the user, and you can focus on your effects while the ME-50 manages the amp modeling to automatically give a good sound. The metal housing and heavy duty knobs were also far superior to the Line 6 Unit. In fairness, this unit costs more than the Line 6. Only downside is that you cannot switch thru the 10 saved sound banks with your foot, so you can only have 3 pedal settings plus whatever has been manually set for 4 settings during a song. Conversely the Line 6 provides extra pedals to allow switching sound banks on the fly. This is a minor issue for me, however, since I only use a few saved settings.Please try again later. Please try again later. Transfigured Knight 5.0 out of 5 stars I did some research on it and have found out one reason it sounds so good is because it's 24-bit. I only use a light amount of effects. I use the delay and sometimes the distortion on this unit. The ME-50 has a ton of distortion tones that you can setup to your liking and the same with modulation and delay. I previously had a lot of pedals hooked up in my chain like delays, distortions, compressors, etc. , but the ME-50 eliminates a lot of room on the ground, which is nice. I am not impressed with Boss' reverb and never have been, but the beauty is you don't have to use the reverb on the unit. I run a Lexicon MPX-110 for my reverb and I believe this is something that Lexicon excels in. This unit is also built like a tank which I would expect nothing less from Boss. I sold them all, bought a used ME50 and came out ahead not just in cash, but in effects and reliability, too. The ME-50 gives me more sounds than I had before, along with more functions. You can run the ME50 right into a PA, or record direct from it. You can even pug in headphones. Add a CD or MP3 player, and use it for practicing or learning tunes. And it's super simple to use. You don't need to look at the manual unless you want to play with the programmability features. Just plug in, switch it on, and start turning knobs. Everything is clearly laid out. For the money, I think it's a fantastic package. It's the equivalent of seven or eight Boss pedals in one box, and gives you the ability to program combinations of preset sounds on top of that. IF you like the Boss sound, this is a perfect buy: many Boss stompboxes for the price of a few. Chorus, flanger, phaser are very good, the univibe and rotary I find soso, the other I never used. Delay section is excellent. Compression, noise control, reverb, it's all there and works very well. The tone modulation works too though I hardly used. It is super easy to use and set up, the wahwah and octave expression pedal work great. The octave setting does a good job of imitating the Dunlop whammy bar (albeit with less range I think).
