Thank you for purchasing the BOSS Guitar Multiple Effects BE-S The. 555 is a pedal type effect unit that contains five diilerent effect units. And finally after 5 or so more years of doing nothing at my place I got to play more with it. But upon closer look, this thing is not bad at all. Back in the day, multi-effect pedals were basically just a couple of standard pedals jammed in the same box, unlike modern digital simulators that just try to digitally emulate the sound of the actual pedals. That allows you to place compressor and overdrive in front of the amp and place delay and chorus in your amp’s FX-loop. Or, it can be used the same way to place compressor and overdrive in front of a tube preamp and have the delay and chorus after the tube preamp. BE-5 compressor seems to be doing to job just fine, but my unit developed a slight fuzzy overtone that is audible at any level of compression. It’s not bad when playing through an amplifier, especially if using overdrive, but I can definitely hear it when playing clean through the headphones. http://www.santilariocasa.it/userfiles/bose-lifestyle-20-manual-magazine-release.xml

It’s a great idea because you can have the distortion or overdrive, but also everything in between, just by blending them together. Distortion side is similar to DS-1, with two clipping diodes after the first op-amp stage, producing harsher clipping. It’s really useful, can be used on a clean channel of the amp or to push an already overdriven amp into saturated goodness. There is no bypass switch for noise suppressor, so you can only turn it all the way down. However, it still seems to cut some noise even turned down. There’s no tap tempo or tone control, just simple controls for setting level of echoes, number of repeats and delay time (up to one second). Repeats are very clean with no added noise. Older DD-3 pedals that share the circuit with BE-5 are sought after for their clean and natural sound that still has some warmth and doesn’t sound sterile. Those chips are still highly desirable. It features rate and depth controls without any tone shaping, just like CE-2. Sound ranges from subtle chorus that can add dimension to distorted chords (think Zakk Wylde or Petrucci) or lush deep chorus suitable for three-dimensional cleans, especially with a little of delay added. It’s really nice sounding, simple chorus. There are two mono output plugs labeled A and B. When only Output A is used, the pedal mixes dry signal with modulated vibrato signal, producing chorus effect. Very cool! Everything is packed on a big PCB and circuit layout is not great. It looks like someone arranged pots and jacks where they wanted them to be and left the auto-router algorithm (from the 80s) to layout everything else. Digital delay chip is all the way on the other side of the board, right next to the compressor circuit, there’s gazillion of jumpers and other stuff that indicates that not much effort was put into making a nice layout. Luckily, it’s not bad enough to cause any noise issues. http://www.mpksieradz.pl/upload/bose-lifestyle-20-manual-pdf.xml

It hasn’t been used much, at least not in the last decade, but the old Sanyo electrolytics seem to hold well. I’m considering re-capping it in the near future just as a precaution. Most of the pots are good, but few started crackling when turned. Cleaning them might help, but it’s not a big deal. Enclosure is made of plastic and although it’s ugly as hell, it tough plastic. Surprisingly, the inside of the enclosure is made of conductive plastic that is slightly gray-ish, compared to the black outer layer. I was surprised to find that it doesn’t produce any noise even in the plastic enclosure, but conductive plastic shell helps shield the circuit from noise. I took it apart and found that cheap plastic actuator was worn off and wasn’t making a good contact with the small momentary switch on the board. It’s an easy problem to fix, I just put a drop of epoxy on each of the actuators exactly on the place that makes contact with the switch when pressed (see below). That solved the problem. Luckily, it fixed the issue, so I didn’t have to dig deeper. I couldn’t find exactly the same square switches, but I found very similar rectangular ones that have the same pinout and same height and they work flawlessly. Every effect inside is very usable, obviously taken from standalone Boss pedals from that period. FX loop is great thing to have. I’m considering doing a complete rehousing into a metal enclosure with proper off-board metal foot-switches. Then it could be used even on its own. Finally pulled it out and bought a new power supply for it, but when I tried it will not power on.It works as well as the day i bought it.I’m searching but not having much luck finding something small enough. Thanks! Mouser has a bunch of them, just search for normally OFF through-hole SPST tactile switches.People can’t see past the ugly plastic exterior, it’s a great unit! Not my favourite OD sound, but it’s usable. http://www.drupalitalia.org/node/71300

My problem is with the compressor, which has gotten so noisy, I find it unusable, other than with heavy distortion. Sort of a buzzy quality. Any ideas what I should look at. I’m not an electronics expert, but I’ve wired new pickups into my guitars, so I have a bit of a clue, and willingness to open things up and tinker. I also have a BE-5B which has a nice quiet limiter circuit that used to sound similar to the BE-5’s until that one got noisier. I checked out youtube demos and they all sounded fine with none of the fuzzyness I was getting. So there was obviously something wrong. I checked out the circuit diagram and changed the upc1252 (again bought off ebay). Totally cured it! I plan to buy one 2nd hand and this is what I neeeded to know. It works insofar as when I plug it in, each of the effects work and when I step on the pedal, it disconnects them, but the only way to turn them back on is if I unplug the pedal and then plug it back in. The problem is that the center buttons do not work, so I am unable to put it into manual mode and select the pedals individually. Its basic function of being a pedal kinda works, but outside of that it doesn't. So, I cracked it open cleaned it all up and now there is less crackle than before, but the center console still doesn't work. There are 2 ribbons (I think that's the right word) of wires that connect the main board to the console with the buttons. I hypothesize that if I cut that, it will have full functionality as a pedal board, but lose its programmable nature. Does that sound logical. I'm awful when it comes to electronics because I know next to nothing about it. I've tried to check out videos on the stuff, but it still doesn't help all that much. The pics posted here are from pictures google (I didn't think to snap a few as I was working). Any help? Thanks! (again, these are not my pictures, but ones I found online) You can (should) test that without cutting the wires. You should be able to simply detach the pin headers (the white plastic pieces that hold those sets of black and white wires) from the main circuit board. Start with one side and see how it comes loose. Then do the other side and the header should come off. Repeat on the other header, and viola. {-Variable.fc_1_url-

Putting them back in place is easier - just line them up correctly and push down. Good luck! Might just bring it back to order. I swapped their positions and nothing. I cleaned everything and same situation. I noticed that mine has three wires connected to a chip that is not in that picture. I'm out of ideas. I may just suck it up and let it be a weird quirk. I was hoping to sell it to get a strat, but I don't have a place near me that would buy a broken pedal. In this circuit the manual mode switch is a momentary type switch the kind you find in computer keyboards. Mechanically it consists of convex metal film that when you push it completes a switch circuit producing a pulse and this pulse is the keyword that makes the digital switching system set up for manual mode. In time this convex metal film may loose its flexibility and either not connect at all or connect permanently: therefore no pulse and thus manual mode cannot be accessed. As a mechanical part this momentary switch has a life expectancy of operation a couple of thousand times but it is fragile and can be damaged as described. This type of switch can also be damaged by fluids. A suitable sparepart momentary switch you can likely find from an electronics supplier or from a left over computer keyboard. When desoldering the momentary switch be sure to add new solder and heat just enough to make all solder at the pcb point dissolve and then remove- this is to ensure the lines and pads stay undamaged. Although this section described a playback method where a basic rhythm (Drum Pattern) of one or several bars in length was repeated indefinitely, you can also arrange and play back drum patterns that have been matched to a song structure comprising Intro, Verse, Fill, Bridge, Break, and End Crash elements in any order. If the output of to flash. This capability is referred to as “overdubbing.”. Useful tip for overdubbing When you are making a new recording while listening to previously recorded tracks, these tracks can drown out the sound of the instrument currently being played, making it difficult to hear. In addition, sound will become distorted and external audio devices such as headphones may be damaged. Since each track has its own send level, the degree to which each track is affected can be easily changed—for example, a lot of reverb can be applied to vocals, a little reverb can be applied to drums, and so on. VALUE dial to adjust the send level until you like what you hear. In addition, you can also record from one track to a different track using just the BR-1600CD in a procedure known as “bouncing.”. It is important, therefore, that you save your songs regularly. Furthermore, if you intend to create an audio CD later on, you must save the bounced mix-down track at this time. If the power is turned off without saving the song, all newly recorded audio data, edited data, modified mixer settings, etc. Start playback on the BR-1600CD, and select the patch that gives the best sound for your song. For more information regarding the modification of Mastering Tool Kit settings, refer to “Modifying Mastering Tool Kit settings (Edit)”. When you subsequently use Disc At Once (p. 62) to create an audio CD, the BR-1600CD will give priority to the selection of final mastering track for songs that you want to write to the CD. In this way, album creation and other similar operations can be carried out much more conveniently. The data recorded in the BR-1600CD’s audio track is. Once this process has been completed, you can proceed to the Move the cursor to the DISC. The data recorded in the BR-1600CD’s audio track is converted into CD format. With the BR-1600CD, however, you can use the marker function to set divisions at the desired points within such an audio track so that it can be written as separate songs. For more details, refer to “Convenient functions for audio CD creation” (Owner’s Manual; p. 216). In addition to CD-R discs, this drive can be used to play back CD-RW discs that cannot be played on standard CD players. Naturally, you will also be able to listen to commercially produced audio CDs on this drive, and it can even play back audio CDs created using the BR-1600CD that have not yet been finalized. Microscope I would recommend it to anyone. G G. BR-1600 Refresher I've owned a Boss BR-1600 multi-track recorder for years and have relied on the user manual to navigate through the various menus and features. Not until I ran across David's tutorial recently did I have a way of quickly refreshing my memory on all the functions within the recorder. I have purchased a number of products from ProAudioEXP over the years and all have been informative and easy to follow. So the video was what to get. It did help me start to understand the unit as to what things did and why. After putting a good year into the unit he was right hes not gonna tell you what sounds best for you.If you think your going to watch it and blow out recordings like a pro its not likley. True you will have a better understanding and I will have to say its great to go back to the video to reference things in the begginning. Time and more time and trying different recording projects will build up your experience with the unit. I am now working with a sequencer and other midi keyboards and drum machines all sync together with the unit and its wonderful now. The video bearly touched on any of that stuff. I would suggest buying a good drum machine that flam and rolls and midi it to the BR the drum sounds. The BR drums sound great but having more controll over sensitivity and effects help create better drum patterns to play into unit using BR drums. But time on the unit will get you their and experimenting will get you better at finding the level of sounds and realizim you want, it also depends on what type of music your trying to record. Its putting the time into trying and experimenting. I took me a good year before I was able to feel confident with how to produce a good sound and thousands of dollars to get the room setup to record. The guitar sounds are so so in the unit and I find mic-ing a amp to beat all the programed guitar sounds. So dont beat yourself up it will take practice to get a good sound and the video only outlines what each thing does. Some things he breezes over so fast youll find your self rewinding the video to catch it. But most of the stuff he explains is good. I would say you will need the video to break through the learning process. The Booklets a bit deep at times with the video it really helps. But in time it all makes sense if you keep on. p p.v. BOSS BR1600 extremly usefull!!i think this is the easiest and the best way to lurn to record your songs I I.C. Honest Evaluation is I'm glad I got it. I purchased the BR-1600 machine about four years ago. I am still trying to gain proficiency on this machine. It is a very, very complex recording device. The BR-1600 machine includes a 71 page introduction manual and a 300 page directions manual that reads like original Japanese, translated into English. The pages of both my manuals are worn, dog eared from usage. I purchased the BR-1600 DVD Training Tutorial to aid my failed attempts and frustrations with trying to master this monster. This DVD compresses all the BR-1600 features and functions into 110 minutes. I ve seen the entire DVD three times, and studied selected chapters. The end result is the DVD is really a complete usage overview, rather than a thorough training course for BR-1600 owners. BR-1600 features are visually articulated with more emphasis rather than repeated efforts made to educate the user. As for training, it s far to compressed to cover all technical aspects offered by the BR-1600.My honest evaluations are that I am glad I purchased the DVD. The visual overviews and operations will aid your confidence in knowing it is possible to fully appreciate all the technical marvels offered by the BR-1600. The DVD just confirms what I have learned over the years when I read marketing slogans like It s easy to record your band. That translates into, With hours and hours of study and practical applications, you will be able to successfully achieve satisfactory recording results. Bottom line, this DVD should be included with the purchase of the BR-1600 machine. S S.A. Boss BR-1600 Purchased for my 17 year old Nephew, he loves it. D D.B. Todd Rhodes 4.0 out of 5 stars This one works well for a used BR1600 with a couple of things that could've been better.although these things didn't effect the unit's overall performance. It bounced, recorded, and mixed well, and the final mixed down CDs were acceptable. The effects worked well too. Overall a very good used unit and transaction.I know someone posted a poor review. But just know this is incredibly complex. Take the time to learn it. Get the DVD an go to the boss site an get the manual.Have required x2 for a manual in English and have not received one. They did send a response to download load one but I am not able to do that from my phone. Very dissatisfied customer!!!
