Close Service Contact us Help Compared to the legendary overdrive pedals from BOSS, it provides considerably rougher and more aggressive distortion, which is clearly oriented towards the stack sound of British amps and further away from the rather toneless fuzz sound of older distortions. DS1 is certainly good tip for fans of a harder pace. With level, distortion and tone controls one can naturally create tamer sounds. And the stability and reliability of DSP effects - there's no need to mention it. PROs: I wanted something simple and versatile, to be able to play blues and classic rock and some occasional heavy metal (maybe even thrash metal). The pedal does the job for me and I highly recommend it for this purpose. It has passed the test of time and is backed by many famous players: Steve Vai, Kurt Cobain, Gary Moore. You can also find a lot of settings and mods available. http://www.akmeninerezidencija.lt/i/boso-medicus-manual.xml

CONs: Not sure if my high-output humbuckers are to blame (and also a lot of other reviews mention it), but at high tone, there is a lot of buzz - than can be used in some genres, but not useful when you want a mild distortion or a slight overdrive. But there are better pedals for that. Conclusion? Buy it, try it, learn to use it. It's a good basis to start for every player. Send report Total features sound quality handling Does the job very good. It can make very awesome sounds Ferre11, 03.03.2020 i have been using the boss ds-1 pedal for a while now. First of I used it like a real heavy distortion pedal and now i use it just to kinda boost my amp with a bit of distortion. It just works great for the low price of the pedal.Send report Total features sound quality handling Brilliant for 90s grunge 26.04.2016 Use: I use this pedal going straight into my Marshall dsl40c tube amp. Send report Total features sound quality handling Very good for the price 25.10.2014 Well to begin this pedal is a classic. Considering that is used by many professionals I am surprised that it is still so cheap unlike the Ibanez tube screamer for instance. The controls are similar to a tube screamer but the sound is very different in my opinion. I have managed to get very good tones for soloing straight away. The distortion knob is very very responsive. With the tone knob and a bit of eq from your amp you can get a wide range of distortions suitable for many genres. What I am very pleasantly surprised about is how good it works in conjunction with other distortion pedals and even the boost channel from my amp. You can play around a bit and get some interesting tones using two distortion pedals at once, or the ds-1 going through the dirty channel. You have to be careful with the amount of distortion coming from each source or it can sound very broken and lose all consistency. Also the construction is very solid, like all Boss pedals made to last forever. http://www.drupalitalia.org/node/71587

All an all a good distortion pedal especially for rock in my opinion. I would recommend it. The DS-1 is the top-selling BOSS compact pedal ever, and its original, unchanged design continues to inspire the creation of great music everywhere. The classic DS-1 tone is behind the signature sounds of numerous rock legends, and is ready to fuel your own signature sound today. In 1978, BOSS engineers changed all that by developing a unique distortion circuit for the DS-1 that produces tight, hard-edged gain with rich harmonics while retaining the unique characteristics of different guitars and playing techniques. That trend has endured through multiple generations, and players around the world continue to seek out the classic DS-1 sound. This approach is critical to the DS-1’s characteristic low-frequency fullness, which is loved by guitarists that play heavy music genres. The distortion knob offers an extremely wide range, from a mild boost for driving amps and pedals to full-throttle gain for monster rock riffs.Turning the knob clockwise increases highs and decreases lows, while going counter-clockwise has the opposite effect. This lets you dial in everything from tight, cutting rhythm sounds to smooth, fat lead voices. The tone control is particularly effective for maintaining low-end definition when using the DS-1 as a booster with vintage-style amps, which often sound muddy when driven with other distortion pedals. This DS-1 distortion pedal is a time-proven mainstay of rock and metal tone, no doubt about it. Three knobs make way for practically every rock sound you've ever heard. If you dig it loud and distorted, you've simply got to have a DS-1 in your rig. http://www.theflightfest.com/wp-content/plugins/formcraft/file-upload/server/content/files/1627295ce70f86---breville-cafe-roma-classic-manual.pdf

Other than that it is distortion perfection. Sturdy like all Boss pedals. Not my favorite distortion ever but without a doubt one that I love having around(on my board it's always fighting between the pro co rat since I'm already at 9 pedals so I can only use one at a time until I upgrade my power supply from 8 which I have 2 pedals on the 500mah port). Surprisingly I've really been leaning towards the ds1 over the rat but the rat spends more time on my board. I think the rat is just falling outta favor cause I only use it as a fuzz, my marshall dsl100hr has plenty of gain and especially so when driven with a tube screamer so I don't really need distortion pedals but they give me a different tonal option which is really nice to have if something your writing, jamming or covering isn't working with your amp in the way you want. Back to the Ds1, if your new to this pedal don't turn the tone past noon. Now every setup is gonna vary tonally but most guys would probably agree the DS1 is best with the tone at anywhere between 9 and 1 o clock (normally closer to 9). And the distortion can really work at any level but it's gotta be set right tonally first or you'll end up sounding like your guitars going through a dimed tube screamer on steroids (very mid heavy hi fi). Basically the tone pot is very sensitive. AVANDCIE-ENERGY.COM/ckfinder/userfiles/files/case-ih-parts-manual.pdf

It's an older pedal that reacted differently to the amps that were being used when it was made but it still can sound excellent with newer amps if you just learn to get to unity volume or a touch above and keep the tone dialed back enough. Volume set to unity volume, and distortion at about 2 o clock. I think if your having trouble enjoying the ds1 or getting usable sounds you should give those settings a try. The basic idea is to use the least amount of time as possible so as far counter clockwise as possible. There's a reason famous names have Boss only pedal boards Well not really but if you are in your 30s or about you will undoubtedly know of Boss pedals. And especially the DS-1. I started playing bass at 17 around 2001. There were pedals n amps and modulations and all the stuff was coming out. But you did not have to work at Guitar Center to see the DS-1. Boss arguably is the most common effects pedal maker on the planet. They exploded in the 80s and 90s. Sure they have always had their few essential pedals but they make their own version of everything under the sun. And the one thing, even the most BOSS hating person on the planet has to admit if they can be objective in anyway, they last. They are physically built like a tank. The pots are sturdy, box is solid etc. The wiring is excellent too. You will read horror stories (as you would with even most boutique pedals).Ok this is a rant. To the pedal itself. I honestly like it. I do understand the common criticizsm they get. It is a noisy mid-high gain nasty pedal. If it was the only pedal that I owned, I would not like it. It can sound hollow and tinny by itself. But it is an Excellent stacker. It sounds good used as a distortion box while coupled with basically most overdrive pedals, especially the ESSENTIAL SD-1. That is the only pedal I've owned that is always on. But it sounds great with any overdrive really. It also is capable of being more transparent than people give it credit for. {-Variable.fc_1_url-

But it cleans up enough when you dial it back to use as an overdrive itself.. Look. I'm not a Boss fanboy. I love em but I'm not blind. Yes. There are better distortion pedals out there. Dozens. But you are not going to find a more reliable and good overall distortion pedal that the ds-1.I am a fanatic about my gear, but for no other reason than I simply love the guitar. I play through a Fender Blues Deluxe all tube 80 watt, 1x12 amp. I play mostly an American Standard Strat and at times, an American Standard Telecaster and Les Paul Custom. Most of the time I use my second channel cranked for a distorted sound, and use an Ibanez Tube Screamer for that crunchy sound (ala SRV). But there are times when I want a hard nose distortion, but not that deep crunchy driven sound. This is when the DS-1 comes into play. It does have a high pitch treble sound, but that's not a bad thing if that's what you are looking for. The moral of the story is that the DS-1 is a great pedal if you use it for the right purposes. Don't expect a rich low end zone and you will be happy.I like both, but if I could only choose one, it would be this. If you want that classic rock abrasive tone, this will help you get there. You'll have to turn the level down if you turn the tone and distortion up. Otherwise, the noise will get out of control. This works really well with compression, delay, an equalizer, and most-importantly, a noise-gate. I give this a slight edge over the overdrive box because it seems more versatile. It can take you to places that the overdrive box can't.Since it is related to the OD-1X, I had high expectations for it. Although I wanted to like it, I knew almost immediately that it didn't have the sound I was after. All across the sweep of the level knobs, it sounded very 'fizzy' and thin sounding. I had the (original) DS-1 and this pedal reminds me a lot of the original. My equipment includes Gibson Les Paul and Fender Am. Strat, guitars into a Marshall half-stack and Fender Frontman amplifiers. Surprisingly, I could not get the sound I wanted using any combination of this equipment. This pedal obviously gets some very good reviews, so it might be worth trying. It's just not for me and I ended up returning it.This is the best distortion pedal I have ever owned, the tones are perfect. Fits perfectly on my pedal board too. Would recommend this for anyone getting into guitar pedals.Sorry, we failed to record your vote. Please try again Some say it's overly fizzy but that's what the tone control is there for. I've not used it on humbuckers however. I have it in the loop of a noise suppressor, which - like any high gain pedal - it needs if you like lots of distortion and are fussy about a clear signal during those lulls.Sorry, we failed to record your vote. This over hyped pedal sounds really thin with no punch. Its been my experience that most of the people that work at guitar center are useless. So, always research and get information from multiple sources. The DS-1 is actually used by many artists including Joe Satriani, Kurt Cobain, John Petrucci, and Steve Vai to name a few, BUT most of the big artists don't use the stock one. Why? Cuz it sucks! The good news is this pedal is simple enough to modify!! In this instructable I will show you step by step, with lots of pictures, how to perform Robert Keeley's DS-ULTRA Mod. I reuse the one I replace with the blue one. Add Tip Ask Question Comment Download Step 2: Disassembly When taking things apart there are some basic rules. 1. Don't force it- Be patient, take your time, and assess the situation. 2. Don't lose it- Keep track of everything you remove. This include screw, covers, removed capacitors, resistors, ect. 3. Don't forget it- Its always a good idea to document how the thing fits together; draw diagrams, record video, take pictures. Better safe than sorry. Always remove the power source when working on anything electronic. To move it out of the way take you thumb nail and lift the bottom then gently pull the power power jack back and out of its slot. You should now see the screw. Remove it. 6. Now you need to desolder the purple and black leads for the power switch from the board. Before you even pick up the iron watch these two videos on how to solder and desolder properly. Even if you've been doing this for a while. These are some good videos. 7. Just gently push the jacks, pots, and the LED in and remove the circuit board. Add Tip Ask Question Comment Download Step 4: Remove Old Components Don't throw anything away we WILL need some things later. You need to desolder. C1, C3, C5, C11, C12, C13 - These are silver polyester film capacitors. C2, C8, C9, C14 - These are round electrolytic capacitors (the new ones will be non-polar). R13, R14, R39- These are resistors. C7- This is a ceramic disc capacitor. D5 - This is diode. Add Tip Ask Question Comment Download Step 5: New Components Pt.1 This is the easiest part of this entire project. Its just pug n' chug. It will make the next step easier. 5. Place 0.1uF capacitors in C1, C3, C5, C12, C13 6. Place a 0.047uF capacitor in C11 7. Place a 220pf capacitor in C7 Add Tip Ask Question Comment Download Step 6: New Components Pt.2 This is where it gets a little complicated. I've made a model to help you wrap your head around the concept. 1. To perform the Seeing Eye mod, you have to connect a 3mm red LED to D5 as shown. We will later mount this in the 'o' of tone. 2. For the Ultra mod you switch in another LED in series with D4 as shown. This LED will be on the inside and wont be seen. Follow the diagram. This is where you will most likely make a mistake if you are not careful. DOUBLE CHECK EVERYTHING!! If you wire it all up and the LED appears dim and you just put a new battery in it, You most likely put an LED or the orange diode in the wrong way. Make sure to leave enough wire to mount the LED and switch. For the Ultra Mod you need to desolder D4 and solder a jumper to the switch as shown. Don't forget the orientation of the Diode. Once all of you wires leading out of A,B,C, and D on the diagram are are soldered to the board, solder 1.0 uF capacitor into C9. Last thing is to solder the 47pf cap across the back of D5 and D4 as shown. This is where you'll mount the D5 LED. Then drill a hole for your toggle switch. Look back at the disassembly picture if your not sure how things go together. Then feed the wires for the stomp switch through the pedal and resolder the purple wire to 17 and the black wire to 13. Add Tip Ask Question Comment Download Step 8: Last Thoughts About five years ago Robert Keeley was kind enough to publish how to do this modification on his website. This is a great mod that drastically improves the tone of this pedal. Also Overdrive Spider has had his How To up for a while. Check out his DS-1 Circuit Bends I like letter D the best. Recommendations Build a Pocket RGB LED Light for Your Home Photo Studio It turns on, but the Tone and Level don't work, neither does the All Seeing Eye, nor the Ultra Mode Switch. Think I put those two in backwards or should I look elsewhere? Thank you. Tomm I'd recommend checking there. 0 joshcory79 Question I was able to find it in one of your pictures, but C11 doesn't seem to be labeled in your diagrams. Also, the 47pF cap across D4 and D5 doesn't seem to be shown unless I'm misreading something. 0 AaronS1 It's a LOT smaller than the old boards. I was wanting to do the D4 D5 mod, but, I'm not sure if it'll be the same since the board is different. 0 DenVeR777 This is very useful instruction. But I've got a problem: Dist knob at low values work perfectly, but when I rise dist value to 12h low level signal dissapear and it's treshold rise with dist level. Another thing is there about 3,5-7v dc on a input jack, its also depend from dist level. Can anyone tells what i do wrong. Sorry for my english. At max distortion it will only work if the guitar is played really hard. Soft notes don't go through at all. I returned the Diodes to the originals, leaving everything the same and it still acts the same. Any hints? Any help would be very appreciative. Thanks! 0 RafiS7 Andrew Gartshore And encoutered the same issue - distortion above 2 o'clock makes the pedal work like sort of noise suspencer. So. when three or four people have exactly the same problem after following the instructions then there must be something wrong with the instruction I guess. If anyone solved this problem - please drop me a line. 0 JeppyMod Andrew Gartshore I stricktly follow the instructions and have the same strange behaviors with volume and distorsion knobs after modifications. Thanks! 0 JeppyMod JeppyMod I really followed the instructions step by step. I can't believe that only 3 of us have the same behaviour. Thanks 0 BrMr JeppyMod I have exact same problem. Please help 0 LucasA106 I followed every step and i think i did them all correctly. I wasn't able to find an AWG 24 hook up wire so i used an ordinary copper wire of similar gauge. Any ideas on how to solve this issue. Thanks 0 ScottF80 A couple of things that made it easier for me. 1)solder the red LED directly to the pcb at D5. Solder the second LED directly to the switch (bend at right angle and solder it to the switch, insulate the leads.) Came out Great! 0 Logan302 Great ible for Boss DS-1 users 0 lectricity Thank you for all. 0 GooveTankPro I found (somehow) that running a wire from the sleeve post of the output jack to the positive side of the main blue LED gets rid of the hum and allows audio to pass through while the pedal is turned on, but the ground hum is still there when I turn the pedal off. Clearly I did something wrong, any solutions or ideas? 0 Mutatedmexican Love it! Thank you. 0 Surgegainsboard. For exampleWhen at least one of the input fields is empty. Every field in the.
